#BREAKING: Teen Student SHOT in #ArapahoeHigh Claire Davis has DIED

Colorado high school shooting victim Claire Davis dies. #HNNAfrica was first in the continent to bring you this devastating shooting minutes after it began last week.

The 17-year-old senior who was in a coma after being shot point-blank at a Colorado high school last week died Saturday with her family at her side, hospital officials said. The issue of school shootings and gun control continues in America.

Claire Esther Davis, a senior at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colo., was critically injured when student Karl Halverson Pierson, 18, entered the school building on Dec. 13 armed with a shotgun and Molotov cocktail bombs. So many cards came to her in the hospital.

In a statement posted on the Littleton Adventist Hospital's Facebook page, officials said Claire's injuries "were too severe and the most advanced medical treatments could not prevent this tragic loss of life."

Her family released this statement.
Statement from the Davis Family:

It is with unspeakable sadness that we write and say that Claire has passed away from the gunshot wound she received at Arapahoe High School on December 13, 2013. Although we have lost our precious daughter, we will always be grateful for the indelible journey she took us on over the last 17 years—we were truly blessed to be Claire’s parents. The grace, laughter and light she brought to this world will not be extinguished by her death; to the contrary, it will only get stronger.

Last week was truly a paradox in that we lost our daughter, yet we witnessed the wonderful love that exists in the world through the tremendous outpouring of support we received. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the first responders, the school resource officer, security guard and vice principal at Arapahoe High School, the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s office, and the physicians, nurses and staff at Littleton Adventist Hospital. Each played a significant role in giving Claire a chance to live, and demonstrated extreme amounts of professionalism, courage and love. Please know that we will never forget the extraordinary work you did on Claire’s behalf.

We ask that you give us time to grieve the death of our daughter by respecting our wishes for privacy.
With much loving-kindness,
The Davis Family

Remembering the Victims of the #Newtown #Connecticvut Massacre: December 14th 2012-2013

Today we pause to remember a sad event in Connecticut's history. On this December 14th, NBC Connecticut remembers those lost and those who continue to grieve. As the state reflects, the families of Newtown ask everyone to consider doing something for someone else…to perform an act of kindness to honor the 26 who will never be forgotten.

"If we want to live in a country where we can go to work, send our kids to school, and walk our streets free from fear, we must keep trying. We must keep caring. We must treat every child like they’re our child. Like those in Sandy Hook, we must choose love. And together, we must change." —President Obama on the one-year anniversary of the Newtown school shooting

DECEMBER 14 is here: #RIP to the children & teachers we lost at Sandy Hook Village #Newtown #Connecticut

Names of the Newtown victims
Though many Canadians still think the real reason I was deported from Canada is because I antagonized gun laws. Is that a bad thing? Not until 26 children are gunned down do we open out eyes and see the problem with gun control.

My deportation headlines 2012 in Canadian dailies
As a  Medical Reporter, the impact is huge and the mental damage is even bigger. It is one year since our children were gunned down by a young man troubled within himself called Adam Lanza. He also killed his mother, a teacher at the school and also other teachers.
December 14th 2012, truly a dark day in America.

Loved ones of victims of prominent and less-known shootings lighted candles, prayed, sang and called for legislative action Thursday during a vigil at Washington National Cathedral aimed at stemming gun violence.

Many of the 800 people inside the cavernous Northwest cathedral were gun-control advocates, including rabbis, imams, priests, teenagers who lost friends, and parents who lost children. The crowd seated in rows of wooden chairs included two busloads from Newtown, Conn., where one year ago Saturday a massacre of 26 children and staff took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

A Gun lobbyist wrote in USA Today: After the Newtown massacre everyone said, "We must do something!" So what did we as a nation do to prevent any future such tragedy? Virtually nothing. We squandered yet another opportunity to focus on the divergent gun-related problems that affect us. Did we examine how criminals obtain guns? About 500,000 are stolen annually. No.

Did we have the open discussion Vice President Biden promised about our failed drug policy and why it encourages gun violence? No.

Did we devise and implement a non-politicized firearm safety program for our schools and communities? No.

Did we examine the inadequacies of our mental health resources to prevent future tragedies like Newtown? No, we did not.

Instead, we spent considerable time and money on another silly "food fight" over so-called assault weapons that are rarely used in crime (less than 2%).

We reinforced the perception that Democrats don't like guns (or gun owners) and Republicans simply don't care!

What's the end result? The firearm industry had a banner year, proving once again that Americans vote with their wallets, not just at the polling place — an unintended, yet eminently predictable, consequence.

No wonder the American people are frustrated with our political system. Our "leaders" don't lead. They are fixated on their media coverage, not the policy implications underlying this complex issue.

No one supports firearm accidents that injure a child or an adult.

No one wants criminals to obtain or misuse firearms.

No one encourages suicides of the depressed or mass murders by the mentally deranged.

It's time we teach firearm safety and responsibility. It's time we remove incentives encouraging criminals to use, rather than avoid, guns. It's time we provide effective help for those in mental distress.

It's time we resume the nation-building here at home that made this country special. We must take into consideration our civil liberties as well as the risks involved in crafting suitable ways of allowing our criminal justice and health care systems to protect lives — all of our lives.

Yes, we learned a lot (mostly about the inadequacies of ourselves and our politicians) since the Newtown tragedy. But we must ask: Do we have the courage to abandon the politics of dissension and embrace the policies of reconciliation?

Richard Feldman is president of the Independent Firearm Owners Association and author of Ricochet: Confessions of a Gun Lobbyist.

Suffer little children to come onto me, for theirs is the KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. May their souls rest in peace. It was truly a tragedy for all. For Victoria Soto, I will never be able to understand how she gave herself to the children by throwing herself as a human shield in front of them. May God shower her and everyone we lost with blessings in heaven.  A school under construction will be named after her. The Victoria Soto Elementary School.

Help @TPSHomicide (@Toronto Police) catch the 3 suspects in Neeko's #GUN murder.

Police are looking for three suspects in the brutal targeted killing of a young man who was at a community basketball game to watch his brother play.

Neeko Mitchell, 25, was gunned down outside North Kipling Community Centre near Kipling and Finch Aves. on Nov. 24.

He was shot several times on the front steps of the recreation centre as a basketball tournament went on indoors.

The way he was shot and killed, Mitchell “never had any chance of survival,” Toronto Police Det.-Sgt. Brian Borg told media at a press conference Wednesday.

Video surveillance captured a “signficant” portion of the shooting, he said.

Now homicide detectives want to locate two male suspects and one female suspect, whose images from the surveillance cameras have been released.

Police are also appealing to the public to come forward. Borg said many people were present when Mitchell was killed.

“Very few of them have come forward to police,” he said.

Anyone with information should call police at 416-808-7400, 416-808-2300, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).

#BREAKING: #HNNSnitch Marissa Alexander BONDED out of Prison on Thanksgiving. New Trial pending.

Mandatory Minimums

JUST IN: Marissa Alexander, a Fla. woman who claims she fired a warning shot in self-defense to scare off an abusive husband during an argument, has bonded out of prison, pending a new trial. You remember she was sent to prison in what mimicked the Trayvon Martin stand your ground situation where many said she was unfairly treated cos she was BLACK.

What a day to be thankful. America's gun laws have been tested again. Florida lawmakers need to examine this carefully.

According to the Duval County Clerk of Court, she must remain under house arrest and electronic monitoring while awaiting trial.

In 2012, Alexander was sentenced to a mandatory 20-year prison sentence for firing what she insisted was a warning shot during a fight with her husband. She tried to invoke Florida's "stand your ground" law but the judge threw out her self-defense claim, noting that she could have run out of the house to escape her husband but instead got the gun and went back inside

An appeals court ruled in September that the judge in the case gave improper jury instructions, and a new trial has been set for next year.

Alexander's supporters, including the NAACP and advocates for victims of domestic violence, have compared the case to the trial of George Zimmerman, who recently was acquitted in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin. Both cases have brought into question the state's "stand your ground" law, which generally allows people to use deadly force if they feel threatened.

Alexander, who had never been arrested before, has said she fired a bullet at a wall in 2010 to scare off her husband when she felt he was threatening her. No one was hurt, but the judge in the case said he was bound by state law to sentence her to 20 years in prison after she was convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Alexander had rejected a plea deal that would have resulted in a three-year prison sentence and chose to go to trial. A jury deliberated 12 minutes before convicting her.

Alexander was also charged with domestic battery four months after the shooting in another assault on her husband. She pleaded no contest and was sentenced to time served.

State Attorney Angela Corey, who oversaw the prosecution of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, has stood by the handling of Alexander's case. Corey said she believes that Alexander aimed the gun at the man and his two sons, and that the bullet she fired could have ricocheted and hit any of them.

#Gunned down: Remembering Kyre Malik Henderson 4 years today!

It was a sad case of another gun murder of a black man . Kyre Malik Henderson murdered 4 years ago today. His mother posted this on her Facebook page.

"On this day four years ago,my son Kyre Malik Henderson AKA Hound Balla was taking away from me and the people who love him.. I miss my son so much.. His love, his honesty and his Big ol smile! He was loved by many! I still cant believe your gone! It hurts your not here in physical form, but in spirit! Your are my sweet Angel! I love you, Kyre malik!! 4/28/91 to 11/18/09 Rest in Peace"

My heart goes out to Sheri Henderson today and always. We must all join in stopping gun violence.

OPINION: How my Mentored #Rapper Don Kartel was #MURDERED in #Toronto Canada 3 years ago.

Donald Grant aka Don Kartel

Canada's weekly news magazine said it best. Read an excerpt below and go to the magazine article to see how my rapper Don Kartel (Donald Grant) was murdered allegedly by a monster called Jerome Derby.

Don had been featured on a series of mix tapes by notable rap and hip-hop artists, and was building his profile through social media. “Ms. Kemi” Omololu-Olunloyo, editor of the music gossip blog hiphossip.com, recruited Don to appear on a show called The Deal, to air on BET. What made him stand out, she explains, was his seriousness, and the fact that he was so hungry. Also, unlike some other rappers, Don didn’t use profanity in his lyrics—and he was anti-gun. “He hated guns,” says Peter. “He never had them, and didn’t want nothing to do with them.” A recent post by Don on Twitter read, “I don’t even RESPECT a pistol.”

Of his career goals, Ms. Kemi says Don told her, “I am going to have the most money by the end of all this work. I am going to have an empire.” She explains, “He wanted to be the next big thing. I’m not talking about Drake, I’m talking about Kanye West, Russell Simmons. He wanted to be a rapper and an entrepreneur, earn [money] the right way.”

He was shot and killed in a hotel in Peel region and almost 7 months later police arrested Jerome Derby in the Halton Hills.

REST IN PEACE DONALD!!

#EndGunViolence: WATCH WITH DISCRETION: The #Kenyan Mall attackers as they killed people and unleashed #TERROR!

Westgate Mall, Nairobi Kenya
Watch the CNN Video with DISCRETION

It was too much for me to bear even as a Guns victim advocate. Shocking new video footage of the Westgate mall attack shows gunmen casually shooting shoppers and taking a break for prayers. New video footage of the Nairobi shopping mall massacre emerged yesterday showing the moment one of the attackers calmly gunned down a man from just a few feet away.

The footage showed the injured man, bleeding heavily, attempting to sit up and pull himself away from danger, before apparently being killed when another gunman in a black jacket approached the scene and opened fire.

The video, collated from a variety of CCTV cameras in the four-storey Westgate mall in the Kenyan capital and obtained by CNN, gave the most complete visual account so far of last month’s massacre, which resulted in the deaths of 67 people and several missing.

It appeared to show the first moments of the assault, when the gunmen opened fire and sparked panic among Saturday shoppers, and then the early hours of what became a four day siege when the attackers stalked the stores looking for victims.

HipHossip Newsnet was the first in Nigeria to begin posting the tweets where the attackers were detailing what was going on behind closed doors in the mall. Some of the tweets were also very graphic.

The first two at that very location. Sealand White, 15 and Jermaine Derby, 19 has still not been solved. I appealed so much for these two and nothing since 2010, now Tyson. Uncle Snoop attended that funeral I heard. You know he coaches kids in football in his hometown and also part of the No Guns allowed campaign.

GUN VIOLENCE VICTIM: CHRISTOPHER ROOKWOOD, 20 #TORONTO, CANADA 2011 #DISCRETION ADVISED

rockwood161011

A dream GONE on October 15th 2011! Look at the picture Christophe Rookwood posed in front of. On the day of Christopher Rookwood's viewing, his mother who flew in from Jamaica met with me as I was nothing but a caring, concerned community Guns victims advocate. She asked me to videotape and take pictures of EVERYTHING and post them so the world can see! I have not done that till now.

These are moments you never want to forget especially when you send your child to Canada for a better life. I GAVE HER COPIES OF ALL THE photos

I took her to the Crime Stoppers event earlier that week in October 2011 and the detectives at Homicide asked us to come upstairs as they wanted to meet her including the lead detective Brian Borg.

A mothers touch and love

Chris was MURDERED with what police described as a high power assault rifle. I held a news conference for the family and appeal. That family had lost two young men, one in 2010 and now Chris.

“I don’t know why he was there,” Patricia Ellis, 50, said to the Toronto Sun. “He was at the wrong place at the wrong time. It’s so hard. I love him so much.”

Police arrived at a townhouse complex at 32 Torbermory Dr in Toronto, Canada. around 2 a.m. and found the 20-year-old with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene and “suffered significant injuries,” said Staff Sgt. Frank Barredo.

Another man later showed up at Humber Regional Hospital with a gun shot wound to the leg.

“He was unco-operative, but we believe the incidents to be connected,” Barredo said.

Rookwood had a hard life with an absent father out of the picture, Ellis said. His mother. Bertha, 50, remains in Jamaica. She sent him to Canada for a better life. He never hung around gangs or got involved with drugs.

Rookwood just turned 20 on Sept.19.

“Whoever has these guns, I want them to get rid of these people,” she said.

Several males may have been involved and as many as 10 shots may have been fired, Barredo said.

Anyone with information on either case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS.

WHY? #Syrian President Assad regime snipers #SHOOTING #Pregnant moms for target practice!! (GRAPHIC PHOTO)

An x-ray purportedly showing a foetus with a bullet lodged in its skull
Bullet in fetus brain even before birth
This is beyond sick but why does this kind of thing have to happen? Snipers belonging to the Assad regime in Syria are shooting pregnant women and their unborn babies in a disturbing “game” of target practice, a British surgeon has claimed.

David Nott, who has spent five weeks volunteering in a Syrian hospital, said each day snipers would chose to aim at different parts of the civilians' bodies as they ran from one part of the city to another to buy food and supplies. One day it would be the groin, one day it would be the neck, the next it would be the chest, he told The Times.

“From the first patients that came in in the morning, you could almost tell what you would see for the rest of the day. It was a game. We heard the snipers were winning packets of cigarettes for hitting the correct number of targets.” On one day more than six pregnant women were caught by sniper fire and on another day two heavily pregnant women were targeted. They survived but their unborn babies died, one suffering a bullet to the brain.

“The women were all shot through the uterus, so that must have been where they were aiming for... This was deliberate. It was hell beyond hell,” he told the paper.

OCTOBER 9th is HERE AGAIN. #Toronto #Canada's #Thanksgiving #Murders. ALL UNSOLVED!

While I was in Canada, I discovered a horrible trend that seem to happen every October 9th and that trend was MURDER on Thanksgiving weekend! There were people gunned down every October 9th or even the 10th in Toronto's gun violence epidemic. In 2011, I decided to have a vigil for these victims. Each murder, I studied carefully while I was living in Canada except for one of a local rapper in 2006. I arrived in Canada in 2007. The mother of that rapper joined me at the vigil and we spoke with the media on how the murders could be solved. After our press conference, another victim joined the list that night at the very spot where the local rapper was killed 2006. Listen to my account of this trend.

Till today, the Thanksgiving Murders have never been solved including one which was a double homicide of two teens. Last year 2012, NOBODY was gunned down.

Below is the Toronto Sun story.
TORONTO - Hours after a remembrance was held for seven victims murdered on Thanksgiving since 2006, yet another was added to the list.

A 26-year-old man was gunned down shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday out front of 90 Parma Ct., south of Victoria Park Ave. and Eglinton Ave. E., Toronto Police say.

Kemi Omololu-Olunloyo, who organized Sunday’s remembrance, pointed out the city’s latest murder occurred at the same housing complex where one of the seven Thanksgiving victims was also slain.

“Seeing this happen on Oct. 9th once again in the same area where 20-year-old Kareme Parks was killed exactly 5 years ago, especially after a vigil for all the Oct 9th victims, greatly saddens me,” she said Monday.

“Lawmakers and community need to get involved now with the police and what I am doing.”

Omololu-Olunloyo, who dedicates much of her free time to fighting gun violence in Toronto, said Parks’ mother attended her Sunday afternoon event in Regent Park and then held another vigil for her son just a few hours before the city’s 37th homicide of the year.

Officers responding to a call for the “sound of gunshots” found a young man suffering from gunshot wounds to his chest.

The victim, whose name was not immediately released, was rushed to Sunnybrook hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Homicide detectives are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination.

Few other details were available.

For now, the slaying is unsolved, just like the other seven Thanksgiving murders.

UPDATE: Carnage in #Kenya as 22 #Nairobi shoppers are dead and 500 plus injured #Westgateattack

Westgate Mall, Nairobi 9/20/13 Photo Credits/Reuters Thomoas Mukoya/Goran Tomasevic
10am this morning, everything changed. It was like I was there with all the wires and photos coming in my inbox. I have been on this story for 15 hours. It should never happen here in this mall. Our Nigerian Police need to watch this. It can happen here!! How do you deal with this at Palms mall in Lekki and other malls in Lagos. We have no aerial monitoring like Kenya. Look at the disaster here. NPF officer Saheed Omosanya will tell you how long we have been talking about the aerial monitoring and forensics Nigeria needs. Kenya has that. People think Boko Haram insurgents cannot do this in a mall. They are already preliminarily POINTING AT AL-SHABBAB!! The gunmen were firing mostly at non muslims. If u wore a hijab today, u were LUCKY! Investigators are officially calling it a terrorist attack.

#BREAKING: #Gunmen attack #Kenya's #Westgate Mall

Gunmen open fire inside a shopping centre named Westgate mall in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, reports say. Authorities are telling me that they have no definite numbers of fatalities or injuries but sources in the mall state that four people have been injured but not confirmed or certain if it was gunfire related. The interior Ministry thru twitter were urging people at the #WestgateMall to keep calm.

"We call on the media to let us evacuate the victims first before you can interview them. We're doing our job to ensure that everyone is evacuated to safety. This is a scene of crime let @PoliceKE do their job"

UPDATE: They are now saying there are in fact armed bandits in that mall in the tweet above with air surveillance dispatched and the gun battle has left FOUR DEAD!! This has to do with an armored car heist. All the robbers have not been accounted for and several people are being rushed to the Aga Khan hospital.

Stay tuned for more updates @HipHossip on twitter

There is no doubt there is a gun crisis in the United States and with Obama's gun control bill defeated by the GOP, its not making anything better. Now comes word of a major mass shooting on Thursday night. My colleague Pete Nickeas who is solidly dedicated to covering this sort of stuff has the detail below. Below is the story. When does this end. I did a newscast on Radio Hossip here in Nigeria when it broke.

A gunman with a military-grade assault rifle opened fire on a pickup basketball game in the Back of the Yards neighborhood late Thursday, injuring 13 people and dragging the city back into the international spotlight for its violent crime problem.

At least 16 bullets were fired into Cornell Square Park around 10:15 p.m. on Thursday, wounding a 3-year-old boy and a dozen other people. All are expected to survive, many with wounds to their arms and legs.

Shell casings found around the blood-soaked basketball courts were 7.62 mm rounds, which are traditionally used in AK-47 assault rifles and rarely found in gang attacks on Chicago’s South Side. Though gun violence has long plagued the city’s impoverished neighborhoods, offenders almost never use military-style weapons.

“It's a miracle there has been no fatality,” Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said at a news conference this morning. “Illegal guns, illegal guns, illegal guns drive violence....A military-grade weapon on the streets of Chicago is simply unacceptable.”

The park is in a heavily gang-infested area, but it is not in a so-called impact zone flooded by officers to deter crime, McCarthy said. The nearest zones are three blocks to the north and three blocks to the south, leaving the Cornell Square as a no man’s land protected only by occasional patrols and an 11 p.m. curfew.

About 45 minutes before the park’s closing time, at least one gunman walked to the basketball court in the 1800 block of West 51st Street and opened fire, police said. The 13 people hit included both the pick-up game’s players and spectators such as 3-year-old Deonta Howard.

Deonta, who was standing near the court, was shot near the ear and the bullet exited through his cheek, according to police and relatives. His family said the boy is expected to recover but will need plastic surgery.

After visiting Deonta at Mount Sinai Hospital Friday, his grandmother Semehca Nunn called for an end to the violence that has terrorized her historically working-class neighborhood in recent years.

“They need to stop, they need to stop,” Nunn said, before collapsing in tears.

Police believe the shooting stemmed from an ongoing dispute between the Black P. Stones and Gangster Disciples. It was not known if any of the victims were the intended targets, authorities said.

“There were members of gangs on the scene and there were gang members among the victims,” McCarthy said.

Authorities do not have anyone in custody and are currently reviewing police cameras mounted nearby. There could be as many as three offenders, officials said.

The first paramedics on scene found more than a dozen people lying across the rust-colored court. One person lay near a bicycle that was on its side. A pair of white gym shoes were left near an out-of-bounds line. Ambulances continued to arrive a half hour after the shootings as wounded people – including a 15-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl – were carried out on stretchers. About 60 police officers converged on the park and crime lab investigators combed the scene. Witnesses say Deonta was the first to be carried away.

The images again captured the world’s attention as international media organizations ran stories about the shooting and foreign reporters attended a Friday morning press conference at police headquarters.

McCarthy repeatedly refused to address the incident’s toll on the city’s reputation or his department’s effort to curb gun violence. “Every time somebody is shot in this city, it’s a setback,” McCarthy said. “But this is not just a Chicago problem.”

The incident appeared problematic enough for Mayor Rahm Emanuel to cancel a meeting with Obama administration cabinet secretaries today on city issues and return to Chicago, his spokeswoman Sarah Hamilton said.

Emanuel flew to D.C. Thursday to raise money for his campaign fund. His East Coast swing also was supposed to include a political fundraiser for Democratic New Jersey U.S. Senate candidate Cory Booker.

Upon his return, Emanuel spent 40 minutes at Mount Sinai Hospital, where he spoke with Deonta’s mother. The boy, who remains in critical condition, was sedated and being prepared for surgery during the visit.

The mayor did not speak with reporters, but released a statement asking the community to cooperate with the investigation.

“Senseless and brazen acts of violence have no place in Chicago and betray all that we stand for,” Emanuel said in a statement. “The perpetrators of this crime will be brought to justice and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. I encourage everyone in the community to step forward with any information and everyone in Chicago to continue their individual efforts to build stronger communities where violence has no place.”

The shootings came just days after the FBI released crime data showing that Chicago had more murders than New York in 2012. McCarthy argued Friday that the statistics were old news and did not represent the progress made in the city, where the murder rate has dropped by 20 percent over the past year.

Ald. Willie Cochran, a retired police sergeant whose redrawn ward will include Cornell Square in 2015, acknowledged the shootings landed a damaging blow against the city’s crime-fighting efforts.

“It’s a setback because we’ve been focusing so much attention on suppressing crime,” he said. “If you look at where we were last year and where we are this year, it shows that. But the perception of crime is greater than the crime itself. While law enforcement has been implementing programs, putting more officers on the street on overtime initiatives, it only takes one incident like this to change the whole perception of the reality.”

For neighborhood residents, the reality Thursday night included a burst of rapid fire and sight of a bleeding 3-year-old boy. Deonta’s older brother, Jamarrie Toney, was at his aunt’s home across the street from Cornell Square when he heard the shots. He ran to the park’s gate and saw his younger brother lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the face.

Jamarrie, 9, had not seen Deonta – who goes by the nickname Tay Man – since paramedics rushed the little boy to the hospital. “I just miss him,” he said.

Another victim, a 37-year-old man who was shot in the leg, said he had been hanging around the park with friends when the gunfire began.

“I turned around, I heard screaming,’’ he said. “I saw Tay Man."

He paused.

“I just saw his face. Just tore off. . .they almost shot his whole face off,” he said.

The man, who asked that his name not be used, smoked a cigarette as he leaned on a cane after being released from the hospital. Medical tape held down a piece of cotton gauze on his left arm, and he was missing the shoe from the leg where he had also been shot.

He denied feeling anger toward the shooter. “I’m just grateful, grateful to be alive,” the man said.

Mayra Rodriguez, 23, who lives in the area with her 2-year-old daughter, heard rapid gunfire and then saw people on the ground. “Good thing most of them got hit in the legs,’’ she said.

“That kid was playing, he didn’t even know nothing, it was out of nowhere,’’ she said of the 3-year-old.

Relatives said the boy's uncle, Jerome Wood, was fatally shot in the Woodlawn neighborhood over the Labor Day weekend. The Rev. Corey Brooks, who presided over Wood's funeral, urged the shooter or shooters to surrender or face justice on the streets.
“There are people who know exactly who the shooter is,” he said. “And I'm sure he will not be safe shooting 13 people.”

As dawn broke today, broken glass could be seen strewn across the basketball court, along with discarded medical supplies, syringes without needles, plastic packaging, orange gloves and a bloody T-shirt.

Before Thursday night's shooting, eight children under the age of 8 had been shot in Chicago over seven weeks.

Police listed the victims as:

• A 3-year-old boy, shot in the ear, in critical condition at Mount Sinai

• A 17-year-old girl, shot in the foot, condition stabilized at Holy Cross Hospital

• A 15-year-old boy shot in the arm, stabilized at Holy Cross

• A man, 27, shot in the leg and wrist, serious condition at Mount Sinai

• A man, 24, shot twice in the stomach, serious condition at Mount Sinai

• A man, 21, shot in the leg, serious condition at Mount Sinai

• A woman, 33, shot in the shoulder, condition stabilized at Northwestern Memorial Hospital

• A man, 31, shot in the buttocks, condition stabilized at Northwestern

• A woman, 23, shot in the foot, condition stabilized at St. Anthony Hospital

• A man, 37, shot in the leg, in good condition at Stroger

• A man, 25, shot in the knee, in good condition at Northwestern

• And a man, 33, who drove himself to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park with a gunshot wound to the leg and who was treated and released.
