A Fenger Academy High School graduate who talked about his struggle to escape gun violence in the CNN documentary series "Chicagoland" was killed early Thursday on the South Side, family confirmed.

Lee McCullum III, 22, was found unresponsive on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head just after 12:30 a.m. Thursday in the 500 block of West 126th Street, part of the West Pullman neighborhood, said Chicago police spokeswoman Laura Amezaga. Though she wouldn't officially release McCullum's name, she said he was a documented gang member.

As part of "Chicagoland's" look at Fenger, McCullum was featured in episodes of the eight-part series that ran in 2014 on CNN. The show and other news reports have pointed to McCullum as someone who stayed in school and moved away from gangs through programs implemented under the leadership of Fenger's then-principal, Elizabeth Dozier.
